It’s hard to imagine how an entire city can get lost but that’s exactly what has happened to the lost cities listed below. There are actually many reasons why a city has to be abandoned: war, natural disasters, climate change and the loss of important trading partners to name a few. Whatever the cause, these lost cities were forgotten in time until they were rediscovered centuries later.Lost Cities were real, prosperous, well-populated areas, many with amazing buildings, artwork and culture, that were abandoned or destroyed and whose location was later lost. Most lost cities are found, and have been studied extensively by scientists.
Do Both Tasks #1 and #2 Below for 5 cities of your choosing. 1. Fly to the lost city in Google Earth and answer the Google Earth questions listed in the table. 2. Watch 1 or 2 videos about each lost city and record two interesting facts you learned about this city OR its inhabitants in your Google Clue Notecard.

Zoom out far enough to see the famous volcano which devastated this ancient city
Find the Wikipedia article for the nearby volcano. Click on this article--What is the name of this volcano and what is unique about it (compared to other volcanoes in Europe)? Why is this volcano considered to be one of the most dangerous in the world?
Next, open the Wikipedia article for the city of Pompeii. When was this city destroyed by the volcano? How long did the eruption last and how much ash and pumice (stone) buried the city?
Zoom in to an eye altitude of about 2000 ft. Then go to street view (ground level) and get a screen shot of the ruins. Then copy/paste into Paint at least 2 other images from Panoramio of these ruins. Do a Google Images search and find at least one image of the lava body casts of those who died.
Fly to the lost city of Petra located in the modern day country of Jordan.* Find the Wikipedia article for Al Khazneh (another name for the Petra Treasury), which you should see at an eye altitude of about 8,000 feet (look to the right of The Petra Treasury. You may need to turn off "Photos" in order to see the Wikipedia icon). Open the full article and answer these questions (you can also use the website in column 2):
Describe one legend surrounding this building (what it was used for)
Name one famous movie that was filmed in this location using this or a similar building.
Find a Panoramio picture of this building and copy/paste it into Paint, then save it for your Travel Journal.
Copy and save at least 2 Panoramio photos of interesting buildings.locations in Petra (EXAMPLES: ampitheater, El Deir, Aaron's Tomb, Nabatean houses, tombs, etc.). Find out what these buildings are and label them (with a text box caption) in your Travel Journal. (Use Panoramio and 360 cities labels).

2. What are two amazing facts about Angkor Wat?
Zoom in to an eye altitude of about 5100 feet and take a screen shot of this entire city, including the moat.
1. Zoom a little closer and place your "character" tool at at least 2 different locations within this city. Find some interesting views and get 2 screen shots of them for your Travel Journal.
2. Zoom way out and get a screen shot of the location of Angkor Wat in the country of Cambodia for your Travel Journal.

2. Find the switchback trail leading to Machu Picchu. Zoom in close enough to see the name of it (in Spanish). What is the name and why is it called that?
